Why Are Wisdom Teeth Extractions Needed?

Wisdom teeth (also called third molars) usually appear around the age of 17. You can have anywhere from one to four (or more) wisdom teeth; some people never develop them. If they develop correctly, they don’t need to be removed. Unfortunately, wisdom teeth often cause oral health concerns, like:

  • Gum tissue pain and swelling
  • Infections
  • Misalignment or crowded teeth
  • Cysts
  • Bone damage

When wisdom teeth grow sideways and don’t fully emerge from the gums, they’re considered impacted. Since impacted teeth can be difficult (or impossible) to clean, they can be more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Impacted teeth must be surgically removed; once developed, they won’t erupt on their own. There are two levels of impaction:

  • Hard tissue or bony impactions, where the tooth is partially or completely covered by bone
  • Soft tissue impactions, where the tooth has emerged from the bone but is covered by gum tissue

Fortunately, wisdom teeth aren’t needed for your mouth to function properly. In many cases, wisdom tooth removal is essential for maintaining good oral health.

What to Expect During a Surgical Extraction

During the procedure, we’ll anesthetize the area to make sure you’re comfortable; in some cases, we may use conscious sedation. We’ll make an incision in your gum and remove any bone blocking the root. Dr. Carter will remove the tooth and clean away any remaining bone or debris. If needed, he’ll stitch the gum tissue closed to promote healing. Afterward, he’ll place a gauze pad over the extraction site. This will control bleeding and help form a clot.

For the first 24 hours after your extraction, you should rest, ice the area, eat soft foods, and avoid the following:

  • Spitting
  • Alcohol, caffeine, carbonated and hot beverages
  • Using mouthwash
  • Hot or spicy foods

If you smoke, you should avoid it for at least 72 hours; longer, if possible. Avoid drinking from straws and strenuous activity for at least one week. This will help ensure the blood clot stays in place and prevents dry socket. Depending on the type of extraction you need, you may be able to use over-the-counter pain medication and an ice pack to manage pain and reduce swelling. You’ll want to be gentle around the surgical sites when brushing your teeth and rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution throughout the day for the first week.
