What is Bone Grafting, and Why is it Needed?

Dental implants are the most effective way to replace damaged or missing teeth because they are securely anchored to the jawbone. However, when teeth are missing, and the jaw doesn’t get normal use, it almost always causes the bone to lose width, height, and density. The longer the tooth has been missing, the worse the bone loss will be. If you want a dental implant but don’t have adequate bone, you’ll need to undergo a bone grafting procedure.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds bone density and volume to the areas where you’ve experienced bone loss. This is done by placing the grafting material under the gum tissue and against the bone to stimulate the body to produce new bone cells. Eventually, the grafting material will be absorbed by your body and replaced entirely by new bone tissue that can support the implant.

There are four types of bone grafting:

  • Socket preservation: used immediately after a tooth extraction to prevent deterioration of the socket.
  • Ridge augmentation: increases the volume and width of the bone to support a dental implant.
  • Sinus lift: adds bone to the upper jaw to increase the height and help lift the sinuses.
  • Periodontal bone graft: placed around an existing tooth suffering from gum disease to help provide strength and additional support.

In the past, it was necessary to let the bone graft heal completely before a dental implant is placed. In most cases, we’re able to place a dental implant the same day as bone grating. However, every patient is different, and there may be times when we need to let the bone graft heal for 2-3 months before placing the implant.

Do I Need a Bone Graft?

Typically, bone grafts are needed when:

  • You’re having a tooth extracted
  • You’re planning to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant
  • You’re getting dentures and need to rebuild the bone
  • You have bone loss caused by periodontal disease

Are Bone Grafts Painful?

In the days following your bone graft, you might experience swelling, bruising, and soreness. These symptoms typically only last a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. You may also notice small pieces of bone coming out of the site for a couple of days; typically, this isn’t a cause for concern, but check in with us to make sure you’re healing properly. Most patients say they have little to no pain following the procedure.
